Bentwood Brides Box

Bentwood boxes have a long and interesting history. Some of them date back to the 800s A.D. when Vikings stored valuables aboard their ships. They were also used to store food in many cultures. During colonial times they were used to store valuables, cherished keepsakes and household items.

19th Century Shaker communities made, used and sold bentwood boxes and consequently they are sometimes called Shaker Boxes. They were traditionally used to store household goods.

In Europe and early America, hand painted bentwood boxes were popular for storing family treasures. For example, the Brides’ Box was given to the bride by her groom to hold her bridal accessories, such as headpiece, dried bouquet, lace, etc.

In Germany from the mid 1700s to the mid 1800s, wooden bentwood boxes were decorated by the box painter in the village. The hand painted boxes were used for a wedding gift or as a gift of love from the groom to his bride.
