Creativity Comes Full Circle
He taught Linda that an artist must express the truth in one's heart through the art works created.
Over 40 years ago, Linda stepped into the art/craft industry as a teacher of fine art and through the years she has honored her Uncle's dreams for her art career and passed those ideals on to her students. During the early years, Linda reached a central Illinois market by traveling to teach art workshops for Dick Blick and Jeffry Alans chain stores, park districts, and independently-owned art stores in the midwest and conducted weekly classes as a Museum School teacher.
After art class one evening, Linda was invited by a student to paint for a live audience every week on syndicated NBC television in Central Illinois. She accepted his offer and thereafter enjoyed 5 wonderful years of painting every Saturday morning on WEEK TV 25. More than 160 television appearances made her a well known personality throughout central Illinois.
During those happy years, her reputation as an art teacher grew and filled her classes with students eager to learn how to express their hearts' desires with paint and brush. At the same time, Linda was working to advance her art career by reaching out to a national market. She demonstrated painting techniques at national and international conventions, making many lasting friendships with the owners of leading companies in the art & craft industry, both here and abroad. Linda taught art classes for many years at Lakeview Museum of Arts & Sciences in Peoria. Her delight was to research Old Masters techniques and fine art concepts and then share those with her Museum School students. When the Burghley House Collection was a featured exhibit at the museum, Linda was thrilled to see each brush stroke firsthand and was spellbound with the richly saturated colors of those art works. She eventually traveled to the Louvre in Paris to study more Renaissance and Baroque art. One of the major influences of the development of the Coulter Grisaille™ art style was Linda's experiences at the Museum and the Louvre. Through many years of hard work and dedication to her dream, Linda became a master at simplifying complex subjects, merging old world concepts with her own playful brushwork, and using richly saturated colors with confidence. Coulter Grisaille™ divides and conquers the painting process by breaking it down into bite-sized pieces that beginners can easily handle. Linda was invited to travel internationally for the purpose of training art teachers in Asia, Europe and Canada. She commenced full time travel teaching in the 1990s, and Michelle joined her as a trusted associate. Together, they taught and demonstrated their Coulter Grisaille art style at international conventions. Three of their favorites were the Arts & Illustrators Convention in London, England, and HIA, the world's largest hobby industry art convention, held each year at a different location. And, the Kaswood decorative painting convention in Canada. Through those years, Linda and Michelle served manufacturers as designers, demonstrators, educators, teacher trainers, art program organizers and product consultants. In 2001, PaintWorks Magazine contracted Linda to design a collection of works with written instructions for a featured article, "Coordinating with Fabrics - Decorate Your Home with French Country Accents". This was published in the January issue of 2002. A few months later, PaintWorks Magazine contracted Linda again to write another story, this time featuring her grisaille art style. This feature story was entitled, "Colorless Paintings -The Grisaille Secret." When the story appeared in the May issue of 2002, it was very well received throughout the marketplace, and that issue has completely sold out. In the spring of 2009, Linda Coulter was featured as the cover artist for a Japanese painting magazine, and therein taught an art workshop in Coulter Grisaille™ to painters throughout Japan. During their years of traveling, Linda and Michelle discovered special destinations here in the United States that would be fun to host a Weekend Art Getaway. They met many people who were eager to host these art getaways and a new door opened through which many heartwarming experiences have developed. Coulter Grisaille International LLC has become well known for their Weekend Art Getaways. Students gather for a casual relaxing weekend of painting fun and to learn the the art of Coulter Grisaille™. Often the featured projects are coordinated with the Art Getaway location, which create wonderful memories from class. Sometimes students and teacher tour the area together during the weekend, and special foods typical of the area are served and enjoyed by all. For more information and lovely photographs, we invite you to visit our sister website at www.artgetaway.com Recently, Linda taught a Weekend Getaway at Grand Prairie of Peoria, Illinois. Her model was a French waiter and the project was called "Wine and Roses" which featured the art of Coulter Grisaille™ portraiture. Students came from Australia, Hawaii, South Carolina and New York to learn Linda's techniques and portrait style while enjoying this very special weekend.
French cuisine was served for dinner, and French wine, cheeses and chocolates were favorite snacks enjoyed by the group.
For many years, Linda has enjoyed a fascination with the study of American landscapes and devoted her spare time to researching the Hudson River School artists, as the founders of American landscape painting, and the Currier & Ives artists who painted nostalgic scenes of New England. Through many years of travel, Coulter's have photographed places where these historic artists painted and worked, such as the Green Mountains in New Hampshire, White Mountains of Vermont, historic Currier & Ives trail in New England, scenic Litchfield Hills of Connecticut, and grand vistas along the Hudson River Valley in New York. They have photographed the majestic Colorado Rockies and the vineyards of northern California. With camera and sketchbooks, they have captured the essence of old Europe with photographs of scenic vistas, narrow winding street scenes of London and Paris, thatched cottages, old stone castles, country farm scenes, fields of lavender, ancient rivers that flow through the countryside. From this rich storehouse of original photographs comes their art works that are now taught in workshops and art getaways across the country. When asked what has been "the wind beneath her sails" through these many years, Linda replies, "God gave me some talent and a wonderful loving family who appreciates art, loves to create, and enjoys traveling." She refers to Romans 8:28 which says, " And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." When God gives talent, He also provides guidance in where He'd like you to apply that talent. The Coulter family discovered together that reaching out to others with paint and brush is a life enrichment course, both for the givers and the recipients. Learning to paint from nature celebrates the beauty and wonder of God's creations, and brings a lifetime fascination for the mysteries of light and color. Linda's professional art career has come full circle, back to Farmington, Illinois, where it all began. The quiet country life and love of friends and family wraps around her as she paints peacefully in her private art cottage in her small home town. Those are the same qualities that first stimulated her love of art over 55 years ago, and they are still inspiring her today. |
